Chapter 66

You Can Control Your Habits

------------------------------
Today's Empowering Quote
------------------------------

"We're worn into grooves by Time--by our habits.  In the end, these grooves are going to show whether we've been second rate or champions, each in his way in dispatching the affairs of every day. By choosing our habits, we determine the grooves into which Time will wear us; and these are grooves that enrich our lives and make for ease of mind, peace, happiness--achievement."

Today's Empowering Question

"What thoughts do I have that continuously drive me into taking the actions that keep me down?"

You can't possibly make a positive change in your life if you don't know how it is that you make the mistakes in the first place--the habits that confine you to making the same mistakes over and over.

...And over.

I can appreciate how frustrating it is to be imprisoned to running the same old patterns--only to get the same rotten results.  I was a living, breathing example of the power of bad habits.

No one type of person is immune to the power of habits.  The other day I was reading about some of the tightwad habits of a few famous, and wealthy, people...

For example, Clarke Gable used to argue regularly with his grocer about the price of jellybeans. John Rockefeller once gave his groundskeeper a $5 bonus...then docked it from his pay when the man took Christmas Day off.  Paul Volcker, Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, used to pack a suitcase full of dirty clothes and take it to his daughter's house so he didn't have to pay to have it cleaned.  Ty Cobb, the baseball great and early investor in Coca-Cola, used to steal soap from hotels and locker room showers and send them back to his home.

These are prime examples of the power of habit.  Even after these people became wealthy, they still retained their old scripting.

Our habits of thought, especially the thoughts that we don't even CONSCIOUSLY think any more, control every action and emotion we have... even in our sleep.

So if you've been reading my newsletters for months, and even if you forward them all over the world, but you haven't once taken those affirmations at the bottom and attempted to incorporate them into your daily thoughts, you are missing out on one of the most powerful and life altering habits you have available to you; because it is impossible to change your action habits before you first make a thought habit change.

Reach up and scratch your ear. The only way you can do that is if you think about it first, either from a direct command like I just gave (which you had to think about) or by the thought, "My ear itches."  So you take the action.

You can't take a single action unless you think about it first.  The thought, "My ear itches" is an affirmation.  If your ear lost all its feeling and went numb, a mosquito could suck it dry and you'd never get the thought, "My ear itches."  So you wouldn't scratch it.  The mosquito doesn't make you itch your ear.  It's the thought, "I'm getting bitten." Numb ear means no thought.

For many decades, yogis have done demonstrations where they drink a toxic substance like turpentine yet it does nothing to them.  They affirm in their minds that no matter what the liquid is, their body will react to it as if it's water.  No cell in their body is harmed.  No treatment is necessary.

You have a mind just like they do.  Same structure.  Same abilities.  There is no difference.  Well, there is one...

Your beliefs - your affirmations, are different.

You can only act based on what you believe... what you affirm is true. Affirmations like, "I'm too short, too tall, too this, too that, I can't do it, She would never like me, I'll never learn this, I'm going to die broke..."

...In fact any false belief you have isn't false at all if you believe it.

If you believe that you're going to own hundreds of rental properties, you'll learn what you need to know and you'll do what's required to make it happen.

Conversely, if you believe (affirm) that you'll need Social Security to survive and that you'll live hand to mouth forever, you won't try to save, you'll spend your money on junk, your time will be spent on recreation and you'll run the other away from setting meaningful goals.

Habits control all of us. Take control of your thoughts.  Make it a daily habit of affirming powerful belief altering, action producing truths about you and about life, and it will literally force you to do and to enjoy (if you affirm to) the actions that will make your dreams come true.

Make a commitment now to be the one in twenty who gets what they really want in life; The one in twenty who takes information and actually does something with it; One in twenty who can take goal accomplishing actions because they convince themselves that it's fun...

And if you don't believe that... yet, then consider this.

Life is tough no matter who you are. What pain would you rather have, the pain of sacrifice and labor or the pain of regret and sorrow for the things you never did because you believed you couldn't and will never get the chance to do again?

Choose the first one... Please.
